I love talking literature and the business of books!

I have appeared at AWP and the Atlanta Writers Conference, and I will be at the Las Vegas Writers Conference in 2027. I taught a community ed and at the Nokomis Library in Minneapolis. I promise a fun, informative, and interactive time!

Past classes:

How to get published

Are you starting to think about how to get your baby published, but have no idea where to start?  At “How To Get Your Book Published,” this class will walk you through the ins and outs of the mysterious world of publishing. We will discuss differences between the Big Five publishers, various sized small presses, university and specialty presses, and self-publishing and assisted self-publishing options. Together we’ll hash out the pros and cons of each and how not to make choices that will haunt you forever. Finally, there will be plenty of time for Q&A to discuss how to make a plan toward achieving your own individual goals.

Outcomes. Authors will learn:

  • The ins and outs of different types of publishing

  • Best strategies for publishing their book

Marketing for indie press authors

Marketing is difficult enough for authors publishing with one of the big five publishers, who find out fast that unless they are Prince Harry or Hillary Clinton, they have to do most of the work. But they do usually have help from publicists to guide them through the process. For authors publishing with small presses—or even harder, they self-published—they don’t even have that. This workshop will give indie authors the lay of the land and what they can do to make the most of the publishing experience. First hint: there are no magic wands.

Outcomes. Authors will learn:

  • The lay of the publishing land

  • What makes a book sell, or not

  • What you can do to maximize sales
